About Us:
Tallahassee Pet Resources Network was founded on August 1, 2005 by
former veterinary technician Kim Libroth to provide resources and
information to pet owners in Leon County, Florida. Ms. Libroth saw the
need for a resource directory for pet owners when she and her family
relocated to Tallahassee in the summer of 2002 and began searching for
products and services for their dog, Max.
In talking with other pet owners, Ms. Libroth discovered that many of
them were also finding it hard to locate the information they needed for
their pets. Many were unaware of where the local pet emergency clinics
were located, what to do if their pet was lost, or where to turn for
help with their pet’s behavior issues. Something needed to be done…
Knowing that many times an owner will be forced to give up their pet
if they are unable to get the help they need, Ms. Libroth decided to
make it her mission to create a resource directory for the pet owners in
her community. Information was gathered from many different sources and
organized into a directory, then in August 2005 the "Tallahassee Pet
Pack" was introduced. It included a variety of helpful resources and
was distributed to all families that adopt a pet through
the Tallahassee Leon Community Animal Service Center (thru August of
2006).
After six months of distributing the "Tallahassee Pet Pack" and
gathering feedback from owners, it was decided that a website would be
the next step in educating pet owners about all the wonderful resources
that are available to them here in Leon County.
TallahasseePetResources.com was launched on March 1, 2006 and is an
expanded, online version of the original "Tallahassee Pet Pack" and pet
resource directory.
TallahasseePetResources.com would not
be possible without the support of our sponsors and the encouragement we
receive from pet owners, veterinarians, shelter employees and rescue
organizations. We hope you enjoy our website and find the resources and
information useful.
Mission:
Our mission: To provide Leon County Pet Owners with Information
and Resources for a Happier, Healthier, and More Enjoyable Pet.
Goals:
- To provide pet owners with resources and professionals to turn
to when they have questions related to their pet’s behavior, health,
or day-to-day care (especially those issues that may cause the owner
to consider giving up their pet).
- To provide pet owners with an
online resource directory that includes: contact information for local pet-related
businesses, veterinarians, pet-friendly housing, emergency clinics,
and pet rescue and adoption groups; pet care tips and facts;
emergency phone numbers; and other local resources.
- To announce local animal-related events being held in the
community (fundraisers for pet rescue and adoption groups, grand
openings for pet-related businesses, special promotions, educational
seminars).
- To help our sponsors (local pet-related businesses) connect with
pet owners by providing space for their ads and business listings on
our website.
- To make the pet-owning community more aware of the resources and
services that are available to them through local agencies, pet
rescue and adoption groups, and animal welfare organizations* (Leon
County Humane Society, TLC Animal Service Center, Leon County Animal Control, HSUS, etc.).
- To help promote the missions of our local pet rescue and
adoption groups* (responsible pet ownership, spay and neuter
programs, lost and found pet resources, pet health and safety, etc.).
Our Responsibilities:
Tallahassee Pet Resources
Network (TPRN) is responsible for providing pet-related information
and resources to pet owners in Leon County through
TallahasseePetResources.com (our website). We also serve as a network
between local pet-related businesses, pet rescue and adoption groups,
pet care professionals, and the community, with everyone working
together toward a common goal of promoting responsible pet ownership
within Leon County.
A Dedication:
This website is dedicated to "Max" (8/1/88-8/11/03), the lovable
black shelter dog that lead us down this path; the kindhearted people
that care for the homeless pets in our community; and all our pet-loving
friends and neighbors in Leon County, Florida…
*Although there are some very reputable breeders and well-run pet
shops in our community, we have chosen to support the efforts of our
local animal shelter and pet rescue/adoption groups by encouraging
adoption of pets from these wonderful organizations. Therefore, we do
not accept ads or listings from breeders or pet shops that sell puppies
and kittens.
