Pet Adoption Resources

It is our sincerest hope that you will consider adopting one or more of the many homeless pets in Leon County awaiting their "forever family". Our community has been blessed with a "first class" animal shelter and a number of dedicated pet rescue organizations that are committed to providing the best of care for these animals until they are adopted into a loving home. The staff and volunteers at these facilities can be very helpful in connecting you with a new pet. Below are some resources to help you in your search for the perfect new addition to your family.

Adopting a pet is a huge responsibility, please make sure to research this decision carefully...

Phoebe needs a home
Phoebe is 2 years old, has been spayed and has had all of her shots. She tested negative to feline leukemia and HIV. She is a beautiful, sweet cat who was abandoned by her owner. Contact Janet at JHG1420@aol.com.

Shelters and Rescue Organizations
Visit our listing of local animal shelters and pet rescue organizations (contact information, website links, etc.) to find out more about the adoptable pets that are available through these organizations: dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, hamsters and reptiles are among the many homeless animals needing a "forever home".

Preferred Pet Programs
Whether you are looking for a lap cat, a playful pup or a pocket pet; a specific breed, size or color; a young animal or a more mature pet, you can request to be notified when your "perfect pet" becomes available. Submit a request form to one or more of our local pet rescue groups or the Animal Service Center and you will be notified when a match is found.

Adoption Booths
PetSmart, Pet Supermarket and PETCO pet supply stores provide space to the Animal Service Center and our local rescue organizations for weekly "Adoption Booths". Volunteers showcase a variety of adoptable animals at these locations. Please see our

Other Options

1) Special Needs Pets
We occasionally receive requests from pet rescue organizations to help find homes for "special needs" animals. Please contact us by clicking here if you are interested in providing a loving home to one of these wonderful pets.

2) Volunteer your time to help homeless animals
Not quite ready to commit to pet ownership, but enjoy the companionship of a furred or feathered friend? Why not volunteer at one of our local rescue organizations or the animal shelter. The rewards are endless and your help is greatly appreciated by the staff and the animals.

3) Foster a Pet
Foster homes are needed to help free up kennel space at our local shelter and rescue organizations. It's also a great way to get to know an animal before you commit to giving it a permanent home. Food, supplies and veterinary care are provided by the organization's foster program in most cases.

Dog Breed Information Resources

Dog Breed Info Center
(Website)
The Dog Breed Info Center website serves as an excellent resource for researching the dog breed that is right for you. It is our hope that you will consider adopting a pet from our local animal shelter or one of the many rescue groups in our area, many pure-bred dogs (and cats) are available through these organizations, as well as a variety of adorable mixed-breeds. According to the Dog Breed Info Center website "The site is designed to list general information in order to help pet owners find a breed that best fits their lifestyle. The hope is that with wiser breed choices, (fewer) dogs will end up unwanted."

Which pet is right for your family?  If a dog isn't exactly what you had in mind, this site also offers information on a variety of other types of animals that  you might want to consider (birds, rats, snakes, ferrets and more). Click here to link to that page.
